Created: Mr. Nek Chand, a government functionary, was the founder of this great garden, which magnetizes hoards of visitors every year. Rock garden is also named as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden. Mr. Chand commenced his work in the year 1957. He worked there secretly during his free time.

In his leisure time, Mr. Nek started gathering up materials from destruction sites near the city. Nek reprocessed these waste materials and give them some shape according to his imagination. Nek’s work was against the law, but he was capable of concealing it for a long period of about eighteen years before it got detected by the governmental agencies in the year 1975.

Mr. Chand’s artistic work was in severe danger of being destroyed, but he was able to obtain public outlook on his side, and in the year 1976 the recreational area got kicked off as a public space. Chand was offered salary, a designation (“Sub-Divisional Engineer, Rock Garden”), along with a staff of 50 workers with the intention that he could focus full-time on his work. At present, Rock garden covers up a region of more than forty-acres (160,000 m²). It is entirely constructed of industrial plus home waste and discarded materials.
